FAQs for booking flights from the United Kingdom to South Carolina

  • Do I need a visa to visit South Carolina?

No, you do not need a visa to enter the United States from the United Kingdom. However, you will need to apply for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) permit before you leave on your trip. You can apply online for the ESTA, which will cost about £24 including processing fees.

Top tips for finding a cheap flight out of the United Kingdom

  • Two airports that facilitate flights to South Carolina are located along the eastern seaboard that borders the Atlantic Ocean. Charleston AFB Municipal Airport (CHS) is the primary of the two and located due south of the state capital, Columbia, while Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) lies to the east of Columbia.
  • Delta flights from Birmingham Airport (BHX) to Charleston Airport (in conjunction with its SkyTeam partners KLM and Air France) will stop either at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) or Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) before making connections at New York John F Kennedy Airport (JFK), Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport (ATL) or Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) en route to Charleston.
  • However, flights solely aboard Delta leaving London Heathrow Airport (LHR) will stop first at Detroit Metropolitan Airport and then Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport before continuing on to South Carolina. Delta also offers flights from Heathrow to Myrtle Beach Airport that may stop first at Boston Logan Airport (BOS) or JFK Airport, then Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.
  • Alternatively, British Airways also offers flights to Charleston leaving from London Heathrow Airport. A few of these are direct flights and others involve connections. Those flights with connections are operated in conjunction with American Airlines and will stop at either Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport (DFW) or Miami International Airport (MIA).
  • Charleston Airport (CHS) services the greater metropolitan area that includes the towns of Summerville, North Charleston, Goose Creek and Mt. Pleasant, while Myrtle Beach Airport covers the region that includes the city of Conway and the towns of Florence, Marion and Lake City.

The flight was delayed for 4 hours. Once onboard the crew was wonderful.

Overall was excellent. Will definitely us JetBlue in the future.

Love the mosaic program, being able to move to an extra space seat for free is awesome

I rate it is good we had a 4-hour travel delay at one point but JetBlue gave out food vouchers and travel points credits for another flight so they try to make up for it

Smooth boarding and friendly crew. Unfortunately as soon as we boarded the unit that provides air circulation failed. The pilot informed us and requested maintenance technicians to check it out. The plane became uncomfortably warm without any fresh air coming in. Plus the repair delayed our departure. I am glad the maintenance crew were able to fix the problem. I also was without use of my tv monitor for the first 1/3rd of the trip.

Communication with the customer and stay is important. Staff off with a minor inconvenience but it worked out of course. Also this was a very old Mint Class plane. They snuck this one in on us. The updated aircraft are much better.

The flight itself was fine, but the boarding process was extremely frustrating. There is no one scanning boarding passes - passengers just scan themselves and enter the jetway. By the time my husband and I got on the plane and were halfway to our seats they determined there were too many bags on the plane and everything at that point needed to be checked. This created a lot of unnecessary chaos. They should have alerted people before getting on the plane that they would need to start checking bags instead of waiting until people were already on the plane.

The best flight I’ve had in a while. The plane was like 25% capacity, if that. Smoothest boarding and deplaning process I’ve ever experienced. Wish all flights were this smooth.

Did not enjoy this flight at all. All of my coworkers flew delta and I chose JetBlue because I really value how simple the WiFi and entertainment is and this flight I didn’t get either. Crew staff was unsympathetic to my system not working, everyone I asked for help with was extremely bothered by my request for help.

I like their airplanes because they have plenty of legroom in their seats they always work with me if I have a change of plans on my tickets courteous and I always feel safe flying with them.

Terrible. Extremely expensive. Monitor wasn’t working the whole flight 11 hrs and American didn’t offer anything. Change of seats, wifi etc. I’m expecting q compensation from the airline

Terrible. Internet/kiosk glitch prevented baggage checkin. Line at ticket co in Ter was under serviced and did not move. Agents did not call for flight but rather allowed time to pass. Then told each person as they reached the front if line that it was too late to check bags so they’d have to rebook flights. At least 15 people missed the flight as a result of this incompetence.

After several delays and being rebooked onto a layer flight, I had to speak to three AA agents for baggage claim to get an attendant. All were in foul mode and reluctant to assist or offer any assistance.

Only thing that I liked it that I got to my destination safely, otherwise American Airlines stinks.

Lack of communication with customers through the delays and poor audio during boarding. No assistance to serve a number of customers with limited time between connecting flights. Lack of empathy from staff. Rebooked on a flight that seemed solely for purposes of taking those that missed their connection the night before. The hostess at the gate arrived late and never expressed any form of compassion or friendliness toward passengers. Just get them on board, so I can go in with my life. Will never fly AA again.

Improvements in communication and empathy are absolutely necessary for American Airlines staff (top down). It’s like they are numb to the needs of their customers.

You were more on time than United. I'm so over united delays.

Good communication at the gate and very nice crew in the flight

Timely boarding process, made up for lost time even after a lengthy wait for de-icing

My seat was wonky...hard and not much padding. I sat next to the Jumpseat for the flight attendant. Thoroughly enjoyed not have a third seat in that row! Flight attendants were amazing. I couldn't answer the "food quality" question as there is no food served on my short flight. I commend the pilot as I know it was super gusty when we landed. Thanks

Flight got diverted because of an emergency and the crew were fantastic and probably saved that passenger’s life. While in emergency landing some measures could have been taken to prevent additional delays. In general not great experience with BA. I used to fly BA years ago all the time, very disappointed by the whole experience, seats were tight, bathrooms tight.

Business class area too small and chair and equipment not comfortable .

Lost my luggage in London Was double charged for luggage

Boarding could have been better organized. The one member of staff disappeared for a while so boarding by group relied on honesty.

I never made this flight but the staff helped to get me rebooked (see previous review)

The seat was very uncomfortable. It helped to use the foot rest. Could not sleep because of the seat.

The seats are incredibly uncomfortable. My luggage didn't make it on the flight from London to Nashville.

The plane itself is old and way overcrowded. The crew do a great job of trying to mitigate. It is just uncomfortable for over 8 hours, bearable, but barely. Boarding, and the baggage game, is ludicrous. Why charge extra to check bags when there is not enough room for everyone to "carry-on" and checking is needed? I do not think these issues would be different with other airlines, I believe it is the attitude that squeezes every penny out of each traveler.

Expected a lot better service paying for a business class seat. Seemed to be short on staff and did not get the service I expected.

I flew Club World and was SHOCKED at how totally absent the crew were for the duration of the flight. So much so that we received no drink service other than the post-departure cocktail and that was it. Wasn't even offered tea/coffee and the in-flight attention was so bad that literally minutes before landing the one crew member for our row was scrambling to pick up left-behind water bottles, glassware, trash. And the rest of the crew had already stowed all carts, he was cramming the trash into the lavatory trash can and was stashing the glassware frantically in the galley as we were on final approach. He was so scrambled he left two overhead lockers wide open (that he'd opened) for landing. Unbelievable!
