Flights from North Carolina to North America: the best tips from KAYAK users

Wear comfy shoes. You'll be walking a lot (from the jetway to the rental car bus was about a mile total including luggage and the up and down stairs required) when you get to Detroit. And note that the B terminal restrooms appear to be eternally under construction. Had to walk to C term to find one open. At 9a.m on a Saturday.
HartajFlew with United AirlinesRDU-SFODec 2024
RDU long-term parking can add 30-70 mins to your departure time. At terminal 2 in RDU, getting a taxi can take 2-5 mins, vs. waiting 10-30 mins for a car app pickup. :)
HartajFlew with United AirlinesRDU-EWRDec 2024
RDU gates can be busy. Newark airport still being upgraded, expect construction. Complex EWR layout can be difficult to navigate. Good luck! 💗
ROGERFlew with American AirlinesRDU-LGASep 2024
Walk with something to eat, because everything on the airport is expensive.

Check-in online and ensure your personal item is not big, these guys are a pain to deal with

The Flagship lounge at Charlotte was abysmal and had nothing flagship about it.
LeoFlew with United AirlinesCLT-ORDJun 2024
Get precheck TSA if you’re flying in early morning. Get a seat on the right side of the plane if you want to see sunrise.
StacyFlew with Sun Country AirRDU-MSPJul 2024
I would get trip insurance and probably used Delta. There are more expensive, but have more flights to reschedule you on.
JenniferFlew with American AirlinesCLT-ORDJul 2024
Both the Charlotte and O'Hare airports are large and well organized. Wear you comfy walking shoes and enjoy the journey!
NickFlew with Alaska AirlinesRDU-SEAJun 2024
Bring a bottle of water on board with you. It took three hours for us to be served.
RobertFlew with American AirlinesCLT-GRRAug 2024
The Charlotte airport is relatively large, so plan to be there early.

Avoid ATL in the summer due to afternoon thunderstorms
LillianFlew with Air CanadaRDU-YYZJul 2024
The flight itself and crew were great but the help at the airport was awful. The staff at customs were arrogant and couldn’t be bothered with assisting me. Another passenger helped me. Perhaps consider another airline. Also, my bag did not get put on the second leg of the flight so I was without my luggage for the entire next day. The airline had said it would come in on the last flight of the night and would be delivered early the next morning. It did not. I finally got my luggage after returning from my day of sightseeing, around 10 pm. A Canadian tour guide told me that Air Canada is notorious for losing luggage.
MelissaFlew with DeltaRDU-DTWJun 2024
Usually Delta is the best but most expensive for this route. Unfortunately flight was delayed 3 hours
AgnesFlew with American AirlinesCLT-ABEAug 2024
Avoid charlotte airport due to high risk of cancellation is high, and inferior flight scheduling.
DavidFlew with Spirit AirlinesCLT-MCOJul 2024
Be wary of spirit. Their bad reputation follows them
NemoFlew with American AirlinesCLT-ORFMar 2024
Small plane meant no overhead compartment room, so you got a valet tag when boarding and they checked the bag at the gate. I didn't realize until I exited the gate door this meant I was supposed to pick the bag back up immediately upon getting off the plane and I could not go back down the gateway again to retrieve it. But they transferred the bag to the baggage claim area so it all worked out- just a little confusing at first.
Verified travelerFlew with American AirlinesCLT-SEAApr 2024
bring your own tablet or laptop if you want to watch movies on decent size screen... and consider continuing to mask while traveling to avoid variety of airborne diseases.
Verified travelerFlew with Spirit AirlinesCLT-LASApr 2024
They dont really bother you about carry-on size, I brought a descent sized backpack and they didnt even check. Bring your own snacks to save some money.

Get to the airport early, the lines to go thru security are enormous. The line does move pretty quickly though.

If you're connecting at Newark, you don't have to go through security again, which was a pleasant surprise.

Love Delta!!! More recently Hawaiian airlines as well, everyone is always approachable on both airlines.

Don’t pay extra for anything on a flight that’s less than an hour.
Verified travelerFlew with American AirlinesAVL-CLTApr 2024
If there are issues with the plane you could be there a long time. We were there for over 4 hrs. Missed connecting flights. Be proactive. If you are going to miss your connecting flight ask if you can be rerouted. Don’t accept poor customer service. Remember. They are not looking out for you. Be proactive.
Verified travelerFlew with British AirwaysCLT-TPAMay 2024
Charlotte is not a convenient airport. Overcrowded and when arriving to pick up your luggage at belts (connecting to Tampa), they have screens informing you where to pick up your luggage, but screens had NO information at all. You had to ask for it to staff.
BrittanyFlew with FrontierRDU-TPAMay 2024
Raleigh is an amazing city. Public transportation is free, and the museums are amazing and also free. However, I would advise against flying Frontier Airlines.

Terrible. The flight was delayed two hours due to weather. Then when we got on the plane, the first pilot ended up timing out and we had to wait for a second pilot. Second pile came on board and we tax it out. Had to return back to the gate because of an unruly passenger. Then the copilot timed out. Had to wait for new copilot. Also had to wait for maintenance to check for fuel. Then found out the second pilot timed out and we had to wait for a third pilot. Was ready to go and then needed maintenance again for another issue. In the end, it was 2 o’clock in the morning when they announced that the flight couldn’t go because the third pilot and the second copilot had timed out.

American Airlines initially postponed the flight. Then they cancelled it an rescheduled us on a flight that would take over 24 hours with multiple stops. They then changed this flight to a reasonable alternative the next day which they later cancelled and replaced with a flight that would take off with an additional 16 hour delay. They blamed weather but I noticed (at 4am) that Delta had direct flights from Charlotte to Detroit. I went on line. Booked it and was in Detroit buy 9am. The interesting thing is they did a similar thing to a family member just 2 days earlier. I don't think I will fly American unless I have to.

I was a little disappointed of not having an android charger. Only one it was for an iPhone. I've flown American in the past and had access to one.

At least it was a short flight. Greyhound with wings.

One of the best flights I’ve had. So smooth.

This flight didn’t happen because AA agents didn’t let us board the flight

Checking in at the counter was very disappointing. The lady had a very bad attitude and smart at me. She had no smile, did not greet me by name, or acknowledge me as a valued customer. Poor reflection of the airline.

First class flight attendant was rude and lacked any customer service skills.

Paid for a window and was assigned to a middle seat with 2 very large people on each side of me. Flight was sold out and I feel I need to be refunded foe paying for a window seat and being put in a middle one..

Would have been good to have a meal since it was a 5.5 hour flight
