The Society Hotel was originally built in 1880 as a three-story building severing as a safe place for sailors to rest. In 2015, the hotel was completely transformed into Portland’s newest and affordable hotel. Tucked away in the historic neighborhood of Old Town Chinatown, The Society Hotel welcomes all travelers, especially the adventurous travelers.
The Society Hotel offers a 24-bed bunk room, 38 private rooms and suites at ultra-low rates for the area. The accommodation truly connects travelers to the community Some of the private rooms are shared bath and some have private baths. The bunk room is for women or men, and each bunk features plush beds, curtains, outlets and reading lights, plus each of the bunk headboards doubles as storage. There is a coin laundry available, as well as lockers and a kitchen just for those staying in the bunk room.
The one-of-a-kind-amenities at the hotel are just as unique as the accommodations. Guests receive personal concierge 24/7, which mean they have full access to tips, tricks, and guides to the hotel and the city. Adventure cards are also available and placed daily on bulletin boards. Adventure cards are ways for the locals to give ideas for an adventurous day and trip around the area. A rooftop deck allows guest to enjoy a 360-degree view of the downtown skyline and on weekends, allows for sampling of local wines. The cozy lobby with a lounge, fireplace and cafe offers a full-service bar, and the café offers handmade pastries, bread, sandwiches, soups, salads, and snacks. Rotating local beers on tap and wines from local wineries are often a perk for guests.
Portland is known for their affordable hotel shortage, but the upbringing of The Society Hotel has fulfilled the need for many travelers and locals alike.

This is not a hotel, it's a hostel. They call it a hotel, but you have to pay for a "suite" to have a bathroom in your room otherwise you share a communal bathroom, which in a pandemic is a joke. In my "suite" there was no tv, no mini fridge, no closet, no dresser, no coffee maker, no nothing - just a bed and a sink in the bedroom, with the toilet and shower in a serrate room. The room was so small that we could barely walk around the bed. No room for a suitcase or any space to get dressed or relax. This was the most disappointing hotel I've stayed at in a long time and a waste of money.
Pros. Wonderful little hotel for a couple, reasonable pricing. The room was small but perfect for us. Shared bathrooms weren’t a problem!
Pros. Overall best bang for the buck in a long while. I booked this place because I just needed a clean bed on a budget and got more than I needed. The staff from front desk to housekeeping were nice and friendly. I could spend the whole week having drinks and snacks at the cafe if I didn't have other family obligation. I will be back if rooms are available for my next trip.
