FAQs - booking Japan flights

  • Do I need a visa to fly from Washington to Japan?

Yes, a visa is one of the required documents for US citizens to be allowed past immigration. The country doesn’t provide visas upon arrival, so the onus is on you to ensure that you have successfully applied and been granted a visa from the embassy prior to taking the flight from Washington to Japan.

  • Where can I exchange currency at Washington Dulles Airport?

To be able to transact easier while in Japan, you will need to exchange a few US Dollars for the Japanese Yen. IAD has multiple currency exchanges where you can facilitate this exchange easily. ICE Currency Exchange has set up shop in the Terminal Upper level near the ticketing booth and post-security in Concourses A, B, C, and D.

  • Which airport in Japan is closest to Tokyo?

The capital city of Japan, Tokyo, has two major international airports serving it. These airports include Narita International Airport (NRT) and Haneda Airport (HND). If you’re heading to the capital, you should consider booking a flight that lands at HND since it is closer than Narita Airport. You should also know that HND is a cheaper airport to fly to compared to NRT, but NRT has the better facilities and amenities of the two airports.

  • Can I hire a rental car from Haneda Airport?

If you need to get a rental car to allow you to move around the area with ease, you will be happy to know that HND Airport has a dedicated rental car center where you can choose from a wide range of rental cars. The airport is served by up to four rental companies, which have a desk in the arrivals terminal. Once you’ve made your reservation at the desk, they will guide you to the parking garage, where you will pick up your rental car.

  • How does KAYAK find such low prices on flights from Washington Dulles Airport to Japan?

KAYAK is a travel search engine. That means we look across the web to find the best prices we can find for our users. With over 2 billion flight queries processed yearly, we are able to display a variety of prices and options on flights from Washington Dulles Airport to Japan.

  • How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket from Washington Dulles Airport to Japan?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a flight to Japan from Washington Dulles Airport is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from Washington Dulles Airport to Japan?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket. You could then fly to Japan with an airline and back to Washington Dulles Airport with another airline.

  • What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight from Washington Dulles Airport to Japan?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you all the options when flying to Japan from Washington Dulles Airport up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. You can then pick the flights that suit you best.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Japan

  • Morning departure is around 20% more expensive than an evening flight, on average*.
  • Japan has an efficient public transport system that the locals use to get from one place to another. To use public transport more conveniently, you should get a Japan Rail Pass or JR Tokyo Wide Area Pass so that you won’t have to pay to use the train every time.
  • Taking a taxi is often a good idea if you’re running late and need to get to Dulles International Airport (IAD) as quickly as possible. They are easily available all over the city and will drop you off outside the departure terminal.
  • To enjoy the lounge facilities at IAD Airport, consider booking your flight with United Airlines or Turkish Airlines. These are the only airlines with a lounge at the airport and also offer flights to Japan.
  • The Washington Dulles Airport Marriot is a great place to stay when you are flying out of IAD. Being the only hotel inside the airport, you’ll be less than five minutes away from the main terminal when you spend the night here.
  • When booking connecting flights, please go for the ones with an automatic transfer option. This is because the alternative, a self-transfer, will require you to check yourself and your luggage into each flight.

We purchased premium economy seats 9 months ago and got bumped to economy when we tried to board the plane. It was a huge fiasco while they struggled to find us seats. I tried reaching out to Kayak to see how we can get refunded for the extra money we spent on premium but have heard nothing back. It was a 14 hour flight and were disappointed that we lost our seats after selecting them 9 months ago.

We purchased premium economy seats 9 months ago and got bumped to economy when we tried to board the plane. It was a huge fiasco while they struggled to find us seats. Flight was overall OK: lovely staff and smooth travelling. The only downside was no food was available on a 3.5 hour flight over lunchtime. Luckily we had realised this in advance and brought our own bento.

The whole flight in Economy was great, the crew were just amazing and the food was great as well

Crew went out of their way for me, not often

Lots of legroom for a small flight. There was in flight entertainment even though it is a short duration. We waited on one passenger to board for a long time after everyone else was on.

At Fukuoka, check in counter stuff was no experience , took long time and took out our preserved sheets to change to emergency exit seats without asking. The flight was late and we missed the flight to go back to SF. My luggage was broken. I had a terrible experience.

Chair was broken. Crew was awesome. Food was eh. Dinner food not so good the sandwich was good ( for airplane food) headphones hurt my ears. It’s hard because no one has plug in earphones

Fast boarding. Cabin temperature was a bit warm, but I guess this is the standard in ANA. The Room seats are spacious, but not long enough for me.

ANA crews are superb, very responsive and caring. Boarding was smooth and so as the landing. Great flights we had with ANA.

Great service, wonderful meals, excellent entertainment, clean bathrooms, top notch experience

I upgraded to first class only to find out that I still had no access to the sky lounge without a sky miles card or AmEx (something that should be emphasized outside of the fine print!) Also, no food or drink service provided during the flight, so I basically paid 4x more just for “free” checked baggage and a bigger seat. Not worth it.

I appreciated friendly service from check-in, to boarding, to in-flight amenities! Attendants were accommodating and helpful. Thank you! Elaine

Delta was really good about being transparent with why we were delayed it’s just that’s the plane was really old and outdated and a lot of the comfort and amenities we know Delta to have did not shine through

Bottom seat cushion is almost non existent. Very uncomfortable seat.

Delta was great the entertainment was outdated. Screen was very small and didn’t work.

Flight did not have seat back entertainment and the wifi was iffy.

Pretty standard flight. Delta has a good selection of movies.

The WiFi has been awful on my last few Delta Air Lines flights.

The seats are uncomfortable, feels like a small seat pad on plywood.

The seats are uncomfortable and there was no power to recharge a phone.

The plane was clean. The staff was excellent. The flight attendants were very good. Enjoyable flight. Overall. The seats in the back are too small but, will always be.

This was a 5 hour flight with no entertainment and with a snack being provided (pretzels and fruit bar), which are both high in carbs and sugar. Nuts would have been a better choice.

Never nice, United Express partners always do an amazing job.

Everything was perfect except the pad at the top of the seat back. It pushes my head forward in a very uncomfortable position and it is not removable.

Good plane, crew, and flight. Boarding was a bit chaotic. Bathrooms were unacceptable. United DESPERATELY needs a new terminal at IAD.

United Airlines changed my flight 5 hours before I arrived at the airport. This messed up my entire day that I arrived in Japan.

Being stick waiting for gate at ORD cause me to almost miss my connecting flight…being deaf United made no no effort to keep me updated as I couldn’t hear the PA

The Economy Plus rows weren’t as roomy as expected, and the meal service left a lot to be desired for.

United ground crew and pilots are friendly. The in-flight staff (flight attendants) are the worst in the world. Multiple trips, always unpleasant, combative, use implicit threats to not allow for a discussion on their decision. Authoritarian. This seems to stem from an internal corporate wide policy as I doubt that United is intentionally searching for people that are not fit for customer facing positions. I will not fly United again. Good luck fixing your business

The flight was mostly on time, smooth and deplaning was quick. Baggage was really quick at the claim. Comfort was so-so and I paid for economy plus. It was still too crowded and why was a family of 5 scattered all around the plane?

No food, no entertainment. But the flight was really short so maybe they had to skip drinks. I was able to board early ONLY because I am old and decrepit and they let me pre-board. I RESENT your dumping us into category 9 if we do not pay up. And when I paid for a seat I was STILL given 9. The pre-boarding helps. THIS flight was exceptionally smooth, please congratulate the pilots.

On time (actually a little early). Was a good and short flight!

Great - quick boarding and landed early with an available gate.

On time, smooth, luggage was out fast at the end of the flight. About perfect.

Newer Aircraft have more amenities, but the JAL flight crew and ground staff are top tier and provided the best customer experience I've ever had on a flight!

Flight departed on time and arrived a bit early. Can’t go wrong with that! And makes a travel experience go so well

WiFi wasn’t working on the flight, several delays and gate changes, ended up taking off 3 hrs later

delayed multiple times. no resolution on anything from AA customer service. was put on hold in chat to talk to manager. was 6th in line to talk to manager for more than TWELVE HOURS - from sometime around 9AM until well after I had gone to bed that evening. no explanation, no attempt to make it right. just a five hour delay because of repeated maintenance claims

Gate check in of luggage was smooth at DCA and luggage came out fast in IND.

I was fine with everything except for the last breakfast, where I did not have an option. the only availability was what I could not enjoy eating.

The people are great! The trip to Japan is simply never ending!!! Not the problem of the airlines, though.

United agent at FLL excellent - due 55 min conx at ORD rerouted us on an earlier departure via DEN and got home 5 hours earlier than expected

I bought a ticket from Brussels to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA via Montreal. When I went to the airport, I learned that I needed a Canadian visa. When I bought the ticket online, there was no warning saying "If you are not a US or Canadian citizen; You need a Canadian visa." I asked for my money back, but the staff at the airport said they couldn't help me. I said, "Make the ticket open, I'll fly later," and they said no. I looked for this information on Air Canada's website. They've hidden it so well that it's impossible to find it easily. I understand that Air Canada makes millions of dollars in unfair profits by selling tickets this way. Why don't they ask when purchasing? They don't ask; because they're making money. Every year, perhaps thousands of tickets are subject to this situation. I will use all my rights and complain everywhere. Maybe they won't give me my money back, but I would advise anyone buying ticket to be careful from now on.

We were forced to check in our carryon and were given a green label that said to pick it up when exiting the airplane. We were told by the flight attendant to pick it up at the carrousel instead. We spent more than 40 minutes looking for the carryon which appeared at the wrong carrousel. There was no agent at the united desk for help. There was no entertainment.

Confusing with Air Canada and United flight, it was a hell, no help, rude people there, stressful environment

People were very nice and helpful. But the plane is noisy, and crowded. Seats are too small. Plane was too cold too. Air Canada app is very slow. Couldn't upgrade seats to the next section. Also surprised that basic economy seats were actually standby.

People were very nice and helpful. But the plane is noisy, and crowded. Seats are too small. Plane was too cold too.

Great crew and the plane was very nice! The problem was that we didn’t have WiFi on both of my flights. I found that to be very disappointing today when all the other airlines always have WiFi so I could work or watch a movie.

It was my first time booking from kayak and first time with Air Canada and I must say it was cheep and flight and experience was so good. My favorite KAYAK now🥰

The seats were very cramped and they kept turning on the lights which made it hard to rest.
