Pros. The location is excellent for our purposes - near the university, the museum, Kings Cross/Euston/St Pancras, Bloomsbury, etc. We first stayed here in 1971 and it is always our first choice. From Heathrow we can come in by underground to Russell Sq and have a short walk to the hotel. Rooms are comfortable and the bar is very nice.
Cons. The continental breakfast hasn't changed in four decades. Maybe some better stewed fruit??
Pros. The location is excellent for us (near the British Museum, U of London, Kings Cross, Euston, and St. Pancras stations. Rooms are comfortable, lighting is good, TV is good, we like the bar, it is near good food shops and walking distance to most other things we want to see or do.
Cons. The breakfast is boring -- hasn't changed since the 1970s. Also, it is a good idea to use the hotel safe for money or valuables as the staff is large and ever-changing. We were robbed several years ago by one of the cleaning staff .But the positive features outweigh that one instance. In some rooms there are design issues with the bathroom - we had a faucet that shot water on the floor because it was too far from the sink. But given London prices, we still feel the Tavistock is a good deal.
Pros. The staff, reception, and housecleaning were all very good, and my room was cleaned well. Excellent location. If you need to do anything with the University of London, it is a wonderful location and value, and there is free continental breakfast or a more traditional English breakfast for more money. Train (underground) goes straight to Russell Square from Heathrow and the hotel is a couple of blocks from that station. It's so conveniently located, and there are plenty of little markets and places to eat if you need water, snacks, an adapter, etc. Very tourist friendly location.
Cons. I had an allergic reaction to their sheets and/or bed. I fear it was bed bugs because I did see a small seed like dark brown casing, but it could also be the detergent in the sheets, or dust. I had hives for three of the four nights I was there and only while in the bed. They changed my room immediately once I told them, but it persisted. I was fine and without hives while not in the room, but woke up with them everyday. It made me nervous about staying there again. It seems I had an allergic reaction to bed bugs and/or their sheets, and they didn't seem surprised when I called down about it, but I got a new room right away. Service was good otherwise.
Pros. The location is amazing, 5-10 min walk fro st pancras intl and 5 min away from the underground.
Cons. No toiletries (only soap, so BYO everything), continental breakfast is basically bread rolls, toast, tea and coffee, cornflakes and jam.
