Singapore’s island city embraces a tech-forward culture that attracts foodies, explorers and shoppers, worldwide. Whether you’re planning a trip there or just want to learn more, here are our tips on how to navigate the city.
Getting around.
Before you go, be sure to download the Grab app. This will be useful in getting around the city. While other ride-sharing apps can be found in Singapore, Grab is by far the more popular one.
The best place to perch.
If you want to see the infinity pools, it’s known that the best view is from the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. However, skip the Skypark Observation Deck and instead head up to Spago. Take a seat at the bar and you’ll have the best views possible without actually booking a room (which a recent search found starting at $353/night).
Eat Local.
While there’s no lack of high-class dining options in the city, if you’re looking for something authentic then head to a hawker center. These food courts are found throughout the city and you can get a full meal for just a few bucks. Try the Old Airport Road Food Centre for traditional Singaporean dishes or the Chomp Chomp Food Centre for some late-night satay.
Call dibs.
While you’re at the hawker center, snag your seat by doing as the locals do. When you see a spot open, leave your business card on the chair (seriously, people will honor your dibs). You’ll see others leaving their credit card or phone. Due to Singapore’s stupendously low crime rate, they feel safe in doing so (but don’t feel obligated to copy).
Beat the heat.
If you want to see the Botanical Gardens or take part in any other outdoor activity, try to schedule it before noon or after 3pm. Being on the Equator means that the sun gets pretty intense at midday. For the sake of your skin (and sanity) be sure to plan lunchtime activities that get you out of the sun’s way.
Tourist trap.
Skip the Singapore Flyer — a gigantic ferris wheel by the harbor — if you’re short on time. It takes about 30 minutes just to finish one rotation. And that’s not taking into account the time you wait in line to get on. While the views are stunning, they’re not any better than what you can get from one of the rooftop bars around the harbor (plus, the Flyer doesn’t come with a signature cocktail).
Keep it cool.
Listen, don’t be a party monster. You know the drill: drugs are illegal, as is littering, and the consequences for committing a crime can be harsh. Doesn’t matter where you’re from. Feel free to indulge in a few drinks, but this isn’t the place to try to recreate your favorite buddy film. Stay safe by familiarizing yourself with the rules of what is and isn’t allowed, ahead of time.
