Rent the smallest vehicle you can get away with, if doing anything in the city. Renting electric will get you better parking at public chargers and access to HOV lanes in some burbs.

Remember that there are no gas stations downtown in Montreal, and avoid AVIS as a rental company as the price you pay will double when you return the car.

DO NOT rent exactly at the airport, go 15-30 minutes out (around airport). Why? Because a taxi can drive on a HOV lane and take you to your destination (to go get your rental car in no time at all:) Now I’m thinking everyone will know my secret 🤣 but it is good to share.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Montreal
Fortunately for travelers looking to rent a car after landing in Montreal, the rental car desks are located right within the airport’s baggage claim terminal, meaning you don’t have to take a shuttle or bus to reach an off-site rental car center. After collecting your luggage, the signs will lead you to the rental car desks and from there it is a short walk downstairs to the rental garage.
Drivers should beware that right turns on red are not allowed on the actual island of Montreal. Outside the island and in neighboring areas, right turns on red are allowed, but on the island it is strictly forbidden.
Rush hour can be rough in Montreal as it has rated among the most congested cities in Canada. However, if you avoid the bulk of the morning rush hour (6:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m.) and the afternoon rush hour (3:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.), then you should be fairly safe from congested streets and traffic jams. In particular, the major highways, such as Highways 20 and 40, are to be avoided during peak rush hour.
Drivers should take note that intersections will often lack crossing signs for pedestrians. As such, cars are to yield to pedestrians crossing as they have the right of way. Drivers should also keep their eyes open for bikes, as biking is very popular in Montreal during the warmer months.

Upon arriving from Montréal–Trudeau airport, hiring Montreal car rentals makes it easy to embark on some of Quebec’s most sought-after experiences, such as the Gaspésie road tour. The 7 to 10-day trip follows the St. Lawrence River through the Eastern Townships and Quebec’s wine regions, including the Rimouski Wildlife Reserve, Bonaventure Island, Percé Rock provincial parks, and Chic-T-Chocs Mountain Lodge. If you want to experience the history of Quebec through the relics of early settlers, you can take the one-day trip from Quebec City along the New France Route to the coast of St. Lawrence at Côte-de-Beaupré.
Did you know that the Island of Montreal is the only place in North America where you can’t turn right at a red light? Just as in Canada and the US, driving cheap car rentals in Montreal is done on the right side of the road, and drivers must wear seatbelts at all times. Note that road signs in Montreal and the rest of Quebec are marked in French, so it’s worth remembering a few terms. For example, traffic will be marked as 'CONGESTION' the stop signs that are marked as "SORTIE' ‘ARRÊT,’ indicate exit,’ ,’ ‘BLOQUÉ’ means that a road is blocked, and ‘EXPY’ is an expressway. Additionally, freeways, or motorways, are called autoroutes and indicated with an ‘A’ on road signs.

Over an hour wait without anywhere to sit. How they could be so unprepared is confusing - they knew how many reservations they had. But the staff was friendly and we ended up getting an upgrade. Just a bummer to waste an hour of our precious vacation time standing around in a crappy hotel hallway.

When I arrived to pick up the car I was forced to wait over an hour for a car to be available. The entire waiting area at Thrifty/Hertz was packed with people sitting around waiting for their cars, as though it was a surprise that people showed up for their reservations. All of the other rental car counters were generally empty. Those companies moved their customers in and out. So it wasn’t just a busy day — those other companies were there in the same conditions.

Friendly staff, trying to give the best service, responsive to our requests, ... When one less trained colleague made a mistake, another made the necessary changes before closing the bill.
I was sent to pick up a car from a far location where they brought the car from the airport and i could have just picked it up from there... bad allocation of resources. The gentleman at the Van Horne location is the kindest, sweetest and most helpful, but I was sent a heavy SUV when i reserved a medium sedan. Had to drive to the airport to exchange the car. The gentleman at the airport counter was also very helpful and professional. Not too impressed by the person over the phone (maybe a manager) that seemed lazy and unwilling to do the minimum work required, i overheard a conversation and the typical illiterate attitude towards customers that is inherited from the Middle Eastern person literally said" if the customer is not happy, they can go somewhere else".... Replace that kind of employee; they don't do anyone any good.

I paid for a Full Size car and got a smaller one. Why can car rental business get away with not giving you what you pay for.
If the guy who dealt with parking when I returned the car had something more clear to prove that he works for Avis would be good otherwise I doubt if it was a good idea to hand the car keys to that person. Otherwise everything was smooth and really good. Thanks to staff and Avis

The car wasn't clean, with sand in the doors, but the worst part is paying $140 for the car, and then receiving a receipt later saying it went up to 311.78?! How is that even possible? We returned the car with the tank almost full and within 10 hours, although we rented it for 24. Never using it again, it is a total scam pretending to offer a better price.

we booked the car (80 CAD) on kayak with an extra insurance for 11 CAD, the price was supposed to be with fees and taxes. when we arrived at AVIS rental we were told (by a very rude personn) the fees and taxes were not included i and that the 11 CAD insurance we took on Kayak was not eligible . We had to pay an extra 50 CAD just for the insurance. TOTAL : 190 CAD instead of 90 CAD (but she made a discount of 20 CAD, so nice !) i don't recommend KAYAK nor AVIS to rent a car. drop off instructions were not clear. car was nice and clean.
It was difficult to find where to return the car at the airport. Went to the counter to ask for help and Dollar employees couldn't care less. Employees from a different agency (Alamo) gave indications to find the exact location to return the car. The whole thing took so long that we ended up missing our flight.

Cat was nice. Pick up was not good. Car we booked was not available. We needed the large car we booked based on passengers and luggage and we had to wait for 90 min for them to locate a car for us. Book as specific car, expect that car to be available when you arrive. This didn’t happen.
Terrible experience, I will be avoiding Routes rental moving forward.

It is the customer relation that is awful at Routes. Never accomodating. Asking for exhorbit sums for protection. Very suspicious company. Refused to give me the car I paid for in total because they judged my Driving permit invalid because it has no picture - which is the case for a lot of people working for the government of Qc in the North. If the Gvt issued it, in itself it valid! I tried to show them my medical card with my picture and offer a proof on insurance, but nothing did it. I had to go to the Montreal Airport to rent a car for more than double the price because of this. I spoke to one of my colleagues at work who told me they had a similar incident with them.
