Marrakech car rental experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users
Insights shared by verified travelers who rented a car in Marrakech
Make sure you know the car agency is legitimate before booking and rent an economy compact car. There are many scam car rental companies operating at the Marrakech airport, refusing to accept your credit card for the deposit, or your additional driver-any excuse to force you to cancel and find another company at a higher rental rate.

Go with a recognised company. There are companies such as Addcar who turn up and work the from the boot of a car . Be careful of scams . Even reputable companies are run poorly. Read online reviews . Also get a Moroccan SIM card on arrival as it’s the only way to communicate!

Parking at the airport is chaotic not enough space for all car rental companies so choosing the right company to rent a car is crucial for a good experience

Driving in Marrakech is quite tricky and stressful if you're not used to this kind of driving culture. It's a form of organized chaos where everyone there seems to know the unwritten rules: when to burn lights, when to cut across 4 lanes without indicating, when to honk (or when not to honk, since they seem to rest their hands on the horn permanently). Driving on the rural roads outside the city is much more straightforward and stress-free.
KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Marrakech
An imperial city overflowing with artisan heritage and angelic vibrancy, Marrakesh is a gateway to the wonders and mystique of Northern Africa. Renting a car during your trip to the central Moroccan city will help you maximize your time as you take in the stunning Islamic architecture, street vendors, and buzzing nightlife. Having a rental car will also let you venture outside of the city limits and explore the incredible waterfalls and sliding hills of the Ourika Valley, or head towards the Atlantic coastline and visit beach towns, such as Essaouira, which are blessed with world-renowned seafood.
Marrakesh Menara Airport is host to many major international airlines that fly across the world and is located only 5 miles from the city center. Use KAYAK to view the best range of rental options from a long list of companies such as Avis, Sixt, Hertz, and Budget, which have counters located in the Arrival Hall of Terminal 2.
Be prepared for plenty of car horns on the streets of Marrakesh. While honking is uncommon in the United States and can be viewed as a signal of displeasure, Moroccans use the horn to let other drivers know their location on the road. Make sure you acquire an International Drivers Permit before renting a car for your trip; simply apply for one at any American Automobile Association branch or online.
Be mindful that roads close to the center of Marrakesh can experience considerable traffic congestion throughout the majority of the day. If you are planning on visiting famous landmarks such as the market square of Jemaa el-Fnaa or the El Badi Palace, it is best to park and use public transport or a tuk tuk to reach your destination.
If you are new to Marrakech, there are several road rules that you should know before driving cheap car rentals in this city. Firstly, it is important to note that driving is done on the right-hand side of the road. You should also be prepared for congested roads, particularly in the city center, and exercise caution when navigating narrow streets and alleys. It is also common for pedestrians, cyclists, and animals to share the road with vehicles, so drivers should be prepared to yield to these groups as necessary. Additionally, you must wear a seatbelt and always carry a valid driver's license and vehicle registration documents. Finally, it is important to note that there are strict penalties for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and that using a mobile phone while driving is illegal.
You can get cheap electric car rentals in Marrakech. The city has several charging stations where you can charge your EV. Some of the most popular options include the charging stations at the Carrefour Market Marrakech Gueliz and the Marjane Hypermarket Marrakech. These stations are typically free to use and offer various charging options for different types of electric vehicles. Additionally, some hotels and resorts in the area may offer charging facilities for their guests. Overall, you should have no trouble finding EV-charging stations in Marrakech.
Be extra careful as you drive Marrakech car rentals, as these roads can be challenging to navigate, particularly for new or inexperienced drivers. One road you should be particularly careful on is the busy and chaotic Avenue Mohamed V, known for its heavy traffic, aggressive driving, and lack of clear lane markings. The narrow and winding streets of the city's historic medina can also be treacherous, with pedestrians, bicycles, and motorbikes often sharing the road with cars and trucks. The N9, which connects Marrakech with the city of Ouarzazate, is known for its narrow lanes, sharp turns, and steep drop-offs and can be challenging for drivers new to Marrakech.

The woman at Marrakech pick up location was nice, professional, and clear. The man at Tangier drop off location was nice, professional and clear but he charged us for cleaning the vehicle which should have been included in price.
I didn’t get the car. Supplier asked for international license which is not required in Morocco. I rented several times never been asked for international licenses in Morocco
They did not have the car I reserved and tried to give me a substantially different car. I had to cancel. Many other customers faced the same situation- left without a car rental. It was the worst car rental experience I have had in more than 18 countries I have visited. There appears to be a collusion among the car rental companies at the Marrakech airport so that people have to find a new rental at a much higher price.

It took an hour to pick up the car. Had to wait for a car to come from the airport to downtown. But the team working in the office was exceptional.

Compact
AddCar Rental was the worst car rental experience I have ever had. They didn't have a booth, no signage. I had to call multiple times to get them to explain where they were at. Then I was charged a $1,465 deposit as well as given a standard very (luckily I know how to drive standard). I attempted to return the vehicle at 6 am and was told they would charge me 40 Euros because it was outside working hours of 8 am-10 pm. I'm still waiting for my deposit!!!

Compact SUV
They are complete scammers. I prepaid for a compact SUV. When I came to pick up the car, they said they only had economy sedan class and that I only reserved a sedan which is a blatant lie. They said I could take it or leave it as and I quote "we already have your money" Then they said because my credit card said Business VISA in large letters I would have to pay $100 extra. I did NOT take the car and I would never ever do business with ADDcar

The experience with Addcar at Marrakesh Airport was not good. We arrived with the same Credit card used to pay for the hire and we’re told there is an extra charge of €145 to the €33 hire cost because the card is not embossed?? He was rude and aggressive about I cold cancel the deposit with this card . You cannot cancel an impending payment/deposit. He showed a contract he had printed out that mentions this . I double checked the contract it is not a thing. This was false . There were three other people who had the same problem in the queue two lads from Germany were threatened with Police for standing their ground . The car hire company use a make shift outfit from the boot of a car !! I did not have a good feeling from this so did not take the car as thought if this was the attitude what will happen on the return of the car . I cannot get a refund .What I don’t understand is how Kayak is misleading the public by saying Addcar has good reviews when if you read Google reviews and reviews on Trustpilot it is rated bad and a scam company !! Do the decent thing and take this company off your site .

Absolutely horrible. Their payment machine couldn't take the security deposit on my card. They claim it was refused but I called my bank and they confirmed no transaction had been attempted. Then try to gouge me out of 675$ EXTRA (!!!) on a 150$ reservation. Crooks.
I had ordered a car for 3-4 days, when I got there I was asked to pay a deposit of 1,600 euros which wasn’t clearly stated in summary on the online check out. Then I was also asked to pay an additional 130 euros in person. Just an overall scam.

Never rented the car. Once I got there the price changed and I was being asked to pay a higher amount and the deposit was 2500 euros which was a little under $3000. Also the car I requested was not available. The car rental associate was rude and very pushy, made me feel super uncomfortable so I left. The rental company took a picture of my passport and would not accept the card I originally paid for, before I found out the additional prices. Reporting this company!
