FAQs - booking Maldives flights

  • Can I fly direct from Detroit to the Maldives?

Given the considerable distance and the unique location, there are no direct flights along this route. Most flights will require two stops, one in a U.S. hub, like New York (JFK), Philadelphia (PHL), or Dallas (DFW), and then another at a major international hub like Doha (DOH), Istanbul (IST), or Abu Dhabi (AUH).

  • Which airport in the Maldives should I fly into?

The Maldives features two main international airports: Velana International Airport (MLE) on Male, and Gan International Airport (GAN) in Addu City. MLE offers proximity to many resorts, while GAN provides access to the southern atolls. Male is the best choice (MLE) when flying in from Detroit. It will give you the most direct and affordable flight options. From here you can connect to wherever your final destination is.

  • Do I need a visa to visit the Maldives?

Yes, you will need a visa for your trip. However, tourist visas for the Maldives are granted upon arrival to all nationalities without pre-approval. You will need a passport with at least 1-month validity, a confirmed travel itinerary, prepaid hotel booking, proof of finances, and an Electronic Traveler Declaration submitted via IMUGA 96 hours before the flight.

  • Do I have to pay extra for baggage on my flight to the Maldives?

Your free baggage allowance will depend on the airline you fly with, and the ticket type you choose. In general, the economy fares will have fewer bags included. For example, the Economy Value on Etihad Airways only includes a cabin bag, any checked bags will be charged extra. To have a checked bag included in the ticket, upgrade to Economy Choice Plus.

  • How does KAYAK find such low prices on flights from Detroit to Maldives?

KAYAK is a travel search engine. That means we look across the web to find the best prices we can find for our users. With over 2 billion flight queries processed yearly, we are able to display a variety of prices and options on flights from Detroit to Maldives.

  • How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket from Detroit to Maldives?

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from Detroit to Maldives?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket. You could then fly to Maldives with an airline and back to Detroit with another airline.

  • What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight from Detroit to Maldives?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you all the options when flying to Maldives from Detroit up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. You can then pick the flights that suit you best.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to the Maldives

  • Morning departure is around 2% cheaper than an evening flight, on average*.
  • Your journey will begin at Detroit Metro Airport (DTW), which is located about 20 miles from downtown. There are two major terminals with different drop-off points, so it’s good to know your departure terminal ahead of time.
  • Certain Turkish Airlines flights on this route may entail an extended layover in Istanbul (IST). For connections exceeding six hours, seize the opportunity for a complimentary city tour they provide. Upon arrival, consult the tour desk for details.
  • With a travel time of over 25 hours, upgrading to Business or First Class can make your journey a lot more comfortable. Etihad Airways gives their passengers the ability to bid on an upgrade to the next class. You can name your price and, if accepted, enjoy luxuries like a fully flat bed and on-demand dining during the flight.
  • The Maldives boasts world-renowned waves across its 1,192 islands, offering endless opportunities for surfers. If you plan to bring your board, Qatar Airways will include it as checked baggage as long as it is less than 6 feet in length. Just ensure that any fins or attachments are removed before packing.
  • On Etihad flights, you’ll enjoy complimentary meals and snacks. If you have any other allergies or dietary requirements, you can request a special meal ahead of time. To request a special meal, order it 24 hours ahead. All onboard meals are Halal, with a vegetarian option automatically provided on flights exceeding three hours. No special request is necessary.

Did not like anything. Seats were crammed, leg space was minimal and food was terrible. This was the first time traveling overseas in American Airlines and was the worst experience ever. Have learned a lesson to never travel in American Airlines.

Did not like anything. Seats were crammed, leg space was minimal and food was terrible. This was the first time traveling overseas in American Airlines and was the worst experience ever. Have learned a lesson to never travel in American Airlines.

Delayed my flights and no communication. We end up spending 6 hrs in Doha. No food or any concern from the airline. Terrible

Check in desk people constrained by fear. Obvious typo on Uganda visa, even though approved, caused loss of flight. Something is definitely wrong with this system.

Between Air India and Qatar my luggage was lost for three days. I eventually found my own luggage location using the Apple Air Tag. Air India used a paper form to report my lost luggage. I could never get past getting past luggage personnel with my report number before they would hang up on me. Only after them specifically telling Air India at Chandigarh airport where my luggage was located which was right under their noses did they react. After three days I finally received my luggage. The Air India luggage folks didn’t seem proactive in finding the luggage’s rightful owner.

Besides the flight cancellation, everything else was prefect. Kudos to Malaysian Airlines.

Operated by American Airlines. Very chaotic and the crew was bit rough responding any enquiries. Restricted leg space.. Qatar would have been better

Qatar airways from Doha to guangzhau was excellent big bird Boeing 777 more room and smoothly flight, I Love it

It was good no problems made it on time for the next flight overseas!

The made us waiting and held our passports and boarding pass making us miss our flights

Not impressed. Only allowed one carry on on such a long flight.

I did not have a good experience from the first point of contact to the check in person to boarding and the comfort of the seats. I would not travel on Turkish again. I will let my family and friends know about my experience which was not a pleasant one.

Food quality and the overall service of the staff and significantly decreased. The flight was delayed at the Istanbul airport and the passengers were kept onboard for more than 3 hours. The staff didn’t kept the passengers informed and everyone was upset.

Cross Atlantic flight terrible aircraft TK10 on the way back : Old configuration tacky . The boarding in Istanbul at the gate fly TK686 was a mess unorganized , very rude ground staff . Overall never again

The food served was frozen salad and hummus. The hot meal was fine. Crew was doing bare minimum

I enjoy flying with Turkish Airlines and such good hospitality among the crew memebers

Good food and wine. Some of the Guy who are in charge to board Passengers on the plane couldn’t use the word “Please” to direct them drop their hand luggage to be loaded on Plane bcos he said the inside storage may not have enough room for all.

Turkish Airlines apparently no longer gives you 2 checked bags allowance on international flights, so that pleasure cost me $165 for my second suitcase at the airport. On top of that, they damaged that very suitcase, which happens to be a designer one and part of a set - ripped one of the four wheels right off.

Pretty standard for long haul international flying. Food was fine, tv/movie selection was great, wifi did not work at all, crew was pleasant enough.

Very poor service. Not friendly and special food ordered but not served

Very bad from ISTACC leg of flight specifically the seats. These seats are for economy not for Business class. I suppose when flying to a third world country you can fly any craft and no one questions it. I was very disappointed for that leg of the flight. This needs to change.

The departing flight from Newark to Charlotte was fine. It was the returning flight from Charlotte to Newark that was awful. We had scheduled an 8:35pm return flight time. We got delayed TEN times all the way to 5am in the morning! We were told over 4 different excuses as to why the flight kept getting delayed. First it was the flight crew needed to rest, then it was something technical with the plane, then it was something with air traffic control, and finally it was because they couldn’t find a captain and had to wait until the morning so the captain could get some rest. It was terrible sleeping overnight in the airport. They offered a $12 meal voucher. That was it! And the only place open in the middle of the night was Dunkin’ Donuts who didn’t even accept the voucher. They should have cancelled the flight much earlier on in the evening instead of just stringing us along hour by hour with more delays. Not professional and unacceptable. There was no refund for inconvenience. I probably will not be flying American Airlines again.

This leg they tried and did well with what they had to work from.

It was nice being on a flight that had working wifi. The boarding was quick - why don’t all airlines have small boarding groups window to aisle? Makes so much sense!!! I was disappointed to be the first person stopped to have to gate check my carryon. Especially when there was plenty of overhead space at the back! But I get it…keeps it moving. Crew was nice.

The flight was as good as it gets when flying. On time departure and arrival plus no lost luggage.

My boarding pass wouldn't pull up in the app very easily and had to really dig through my email. That caused a delay in TSA..

Packed commercial flight was as comfortable as can be expected

My seat was very worn. Otherwise I had an excellent flight

I'm not a valued flyer so I'm always in the last group to board...that sucks, always

My flight back my reservations were list because they said I didn't pay my pet fee when I had a receipt

Flight was cancelled as I was in line for security. Next available flight got me to my destination 24 hrs later than the first. No refunds offered, just credit toward another flight. I booked with delta, got to my destination only 2 hrs behind my original flight schedule. Won’t be using American again.
