Just know that you may have to pay additional money for insurance and make sure you ask for and understand all of your insurance options before you give them more money. Also know that you can get around Miami just fine without paying tolls if you choose to. Don’t worry about the fear tactics, or at least weigh out the risks for yourself and make the best decision for you without feeling pressured by rental car toll policies that might be outrageous. Parking in Miami always varies from expensive to relatively inexpensive depending on where you’re going, how long you plan to stay, and if you are parking on the street or not. Just be prepared for that. There is almost always a fee to park if you are in the most popular areas (which is not the case in all cities).

Small car fits our two suitcases. Toyota Camry was wonderful. We bought a Sunpass for Toll-Roads. As non US-Residents it was not possible to register the "transponder" device on the Sunpass Website. App can not be installed as non US. We had to go to a Sunpass Service Center to register. You need US address and US phone number..

Use the shuttle bus located outside the Miami airport car rental area to go to the off-premises location. It comes by every 20 minutes. There are no signs indicating the rental company is located off-premises. The employees are excellent and a little tip for the drivers is appreciated. Credit Cards in your name only, I believe. No debit or borrowed cards. I also think you have to have proof of personal car insurance even if you buy their insurance. Seems weird but didn't have an accident. You should look into that.

With Sixt is easy rental. I'm not a fan of the Miami Airport because you have to walk a lot around the airport to arrive at the rent a car area. But service was good if you are scare of Floridian drivers they offer $11 dollars per day insurance. But if you are not driving around much then maybe you may skip that. Usually other rentals take your personal policy ensurance as a warranty but no sixt. Good service, fast and easy👍

Download the apps to pay for street parking with ease. There are tons of tolls (small $ amounts) which do not accept cash or card but use a device in the car to mail you bills; if you don’t have that you’ll get charged late fees on top of the tolls.

Car, checkout and price were good. But checkin the line was hours long, and the employee lied to us saying our car was not ready for the next hours and we could upgrade for a higher price and have a car ready immediately. When we refused, he told us our car is ready.

First off, it took forever to get the vehicle out of the garage, because they only had two tellers working. And after explaining to the lady that I have to make a 700 mile trip and requesting an economy gas vehicle, I was given an electronic vehicle without asking or being told so I had to get the vehicle towed to a charging station. It took me 11 hours to get to Daytona Beach. Where the lady at the airport was kind enough to exchange it for a different car. I will give negative reviews to the Miami location if I could.

We ordered a premium smaller vehicle and when we picked it up, they said they needed to send someone upstairs to go get our vehicle and bring it down. We waited 45 minutes and asked people about it 3 times before we finally got our car. And when we did, the car was not ever upstairs. It was sitting right behind the booth, in the lot with everything else. They were just so disorganized they didn’t know it. There was also only one person there helping people. So we watched several other people have to wait very long wait times just to speak to the person to get their car. And this was in the garage, not in the office.

While the car itself met my expectations, my experience at the counter was disappointing. The representative added services like Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) and Additional Liability Insurance (ALI) without my consent or explanation. They assigned our rental car to us and another customer from Budget. We came back to the desk and they assigned us to another car only had 2 bucket seats in the back which would not work with the baby car seat. They then gave us the Ford Explore and when we drove out to the gate to leave, the attendant said the paperwork was not right. The representative never input the Ford Explore in the system. We spent more than an hour straightening the mess out and finally we were on our way back to the west coast. It was not an enjoyable experience.

A few parties in front of me needed attention from multiple employees to resolve their issues, further slowing down the process for everyone. No efficiency or priority for customers who had pre-checked in - everyone had to wait the same.

A total nightmare it started with the very rude woman at the counter at budget Ft. Lauderdale airport. Then my grandson got in and sat on gym that was in a rear seat so van was not cleaned out. Wiper blades wore out would not clean window off at all. Kept getting a message that oil level was low the fan switch for the heater only worked on high and had to keep messing with it to keep it running. Then when we dropped Van off we were a little late 30 minutes but it was because of snow storm and they said don’t worry about it but then charged me for an extra hour anyway. Then charged for fuel but it was on full and had just stopped and filled it up 5 miles from airport. I would definitely never use budget ever again

I declined all insurances while booking online. (I have a visa premier providing sufficient coverage) At pick-up, the lady at the desk, absolutly unpleasant, tricked me into making me select US$ 15.99 + 34.99 of insurances for a one day rental at US$40. Totally unacceptable...

Desk was closed with zero signage. I received a email stating “skip the line” in order to check out virtually via “Web Check Out”. The process did not work despite repeated attempts. The original email confirmation I received came from Hertz, so I tried that desk, which took 1 hour to go through before being seen. After which they said they could not help me and I needed to go to Dollar instead. I then proceeded to wait in the Dollar line which took an additional 30 minutes, only for them to tell me I didn’t need to wait in line at all because I had completed “Web Check Out” (which never worked). Dollar sent me to the garage where they accepted my reservation but still had to wait yet ANOTHER 45 minutes before finally getting in a car. Absolutely terrible management and a terrible experience. Will never use Thrifty again.

Thrifty counter at airport was closed- long line at Dollar counter: then had to go on lower level at another counter to get car. Nearly 2 hours before we get car: what’s the use of checking online?

When I booked, there were gas vehicles available for the same price but was given an electric vehicle with no instructions on how or where to charge it. I upgraded to a gas vehicle and it ended up costing me more when they were available for the same price in the beginning. The car I ended up receiving worked but felt like the clutch was slipping and wouldn't engage properly.

Pros - None Cons - Wait time to get a car is 1 - 2 hours (I am not kidding) - Wait time in line to get a car is 1 - 2 hours. - Line is always out the door. - No cars are available in a timely fashion. - If your license is damaged, you are SOL (even though they know who you are). - You can not rebook the car rental in real time at the counter if you have trouble. - I ended up taking an Uber to the Miami Car Rental Center at the airport and got a Car Rental there (I know, it's that bad). Overall it's a really bad discount Car Rental facility. I will not do business with these places ever again. Getting a car from here can ruin your trip. Just book the Car Rental from a reputable brand at the airport and reduce the cost of your airfare or hotel to offset it.

Worst car rental experience we’ve ever had. We had booked a van months in advanced. Our flight times had been changed by the airline about a month prior to our trip. Fox NEVER reached out to us to explain there is only a 6 hour grace window of time from arrival to when they will hold your car for you. We had no idea. So after a very long travel day we take the shuttle to their off-site facility 20 min away (another thing we didn’t realize because the website said they were located AT the airport), we were told our reservation had been cancelled because we were like 45 min passed the grace window of arrival and they had no other cars. We had two small children with us and they were completely unhelpful and showed no remorse. NEVER EVER book with this company.

Wonderfully surprised by Easirent!! It was a very last minute booking as Enterprise majestically f**ked up by not having any vehicles whereas we had a reservation .... (literally just like a Seinfeld episode). So we booked a car with Easirent, and not only it was fairly priced, but they also were super friendly and effective at the location, but the car was quite decent, and there were no hidden fees. Of course, if you don't have insurance coverage already, that's an extra, as well as the daily toll fee thing (but that's the case for ANY rental car these days). But we really only paid what we booked for ($42 for one day), plus the $14 daily toll fee (unlimited tolls, was worth it for our itinerary). Returning the car was equally as easy and quick as picking it up, and everyone was efficient and nice. Well done Easirent. One note on the location: while this did not matter to us, the location in a run-down industrial sketchy neighborhood in the "burbs" of the airport may be a little shocking or dissuading for some people, and especially tourists. But it's actually very close to the airport (10min walk to the airport train station), and we never felt unsafe while walking. It's just not a fancy neighborhood.

First of all I booked a convertible, but when I was there it turned out there was no any. So I had a rebook a new car, which was usual. Additional to this they had no any insurance included, so I had to buy basic insurance per day plus a huge deposit, that was not returned till today, even though I returned a car 4 days ago.

The car was clean, but the sale tactics were not. I had prepaid for the vehicle and read all of the fine print listed on the rental page before purchase...and also the NextCar policy page on their website! Yet when arriving to pick up the vehicle, agent Johan said my insurance declaration page was not sufficient (it has never been a problem before, anywhere) and that I must pay for their liability insurance. It was twice the price of the vehicle per day. I wasted over an hour trying to communicate the unfairness, but they pointed to a line in their MIA franchisee website (not the NextCar home page) that justified their charges. Bad faith business.

Very very very silly drop off procedure. You can’t drop your keys off without standing in a 30m line. Just use a drop box. Such a weird waste of time to be required to stand in line to give keys back by hand. They don’t even need me to sign anything. Just stand there for 30m then you can go. These guys ware your time at the airport. Good clean cars, just don’t waste your time here. Go on vacation, make your flight, just don’t let them waste your time.

For the price it was a good deal. With that price expect some downsides. The rental company is not on location and you have to wait for a shuttle, which can be difficult with luggage. There was only one employee checking out for all the off Airport rental companies, so the wait time was longer. The security deposit is 500, double from what the other rental companies cost. You have to check out your own rental, look for any damages take pictures and document them on this damage sheet, then bring them back the sheet and sign off. After just getting off a 4 hr flight we were exhausted. In the end we saved $200 but paid for it in extra time and effort.

The fact that the reservation needs be clearer about it being done 24 hours before pickup time. The staff wasn’t very friendly and pretty much found any excuse to turn down about five other clients before me. All they did was complain about how tired they were and the many hours they’ve been working.

Pick up was great! Had the car ready we had asked for. Unfortunately the guy at the counter changed my drop off time from my reservation so they tried to charge us an extra two hours when we returned the car. The man who was there helped out and was able to make sure we were not overcharged. I appreciate him but wish the other guy hadn’t done that on the front end.

The pickup process lasted over an hour with only 6 customers in front of me. There was 1 employee managing the desk (who was working hard), but it was too much for 1 person. After receiving the keys, the car was not in the spot (A-11) that they told me it was so I walked around the garage hitting the alarm until I found it. Drop off was incredibly ambiguous- took me 10 mins to find another renter’s employee and confirm the drop off procedure. I will NEVER rent from Advantage again.

The staffing!! There was ONE, not two, but ONE staff working. We waited over half an hour to finally start checking in even though we filled out all the information through the link they sent via text. The staff was rude, too sarcastic sounding, and took out important information in regards to the gas filling upon return just to get us to over pay!!

Staff really wanted to push us into an SUV, which we really did not need. We caved in and let him "upgrade" us to a Hyundai Santa Fe from the originally reserved Toyota Camry, which we are quite sure would have been a much nicer ride. Upon pick up, we noticed accident damage along the passenger side of the vehicle. As we saw another customer drive away in the very nice Toyota Camry we originally reserved, we were not happy.

When we arrived, they said there was one car available in our price group (full/standard car)… but it had Totally Bald Tires - no treads on the front two tires at all. They had mini vans available with good tires, but said that would cost a significant amount more money. We waited there for over an hour, and one of the guys finally brought up a car from the back that had better tires. The person who drove the shuttle & eventually found the safe car was very nice. It just took a long time and it always upsets me when they offer you cars with tires that are unsafe. (We had a rental car tire shred on a busy interstate once - terrifying.) The shop is a shuttle ride away from the airport, also. All in all, an ok experience, but won’t return.

It was really hard to find the shuttle driver and when we did it took us to a sketchy feeling part of town took us into a warehouse and had us talk with a representative with a very heavy accent over a computer screen. We were not told where to bring the car back - turns out we had to find the sketchy warehouse back and they could not take us back to our hotel even though it was closer than the airport.

It wasnt the car that we had originally rented. It was nice but was not big enough for our party. We were told we would loose our money already paid at 12 at night and that this was the only option. They couldnt speak very good english and a $200 insurance was still placed on my card after I told them not to.

I never pick up my car the unprofessional front desk do not allow me to offer my personal insurance car. They request me to paid 350 dollars for the insurance, which I show her the disclosure documents from my insurance company and she said that if my name is not in the insurance card, she will not letting me driver the car. This is the poor company that is why they are outside of the rental card building in the airport.please, do not book in that company don't loose you time and money.

There was nothing I like about this car rental.experience. Lines were long and there were an incredible amount of people in line. Lastly, I was forced to get collision insurance It was explained to me that the is company doesn’t compare with Heryz, Budget. Avis and /of none of the big company rentals. In a nutshell I won’t be renting from this company agai. The use deceit practices.

Cons:

Pickup and dropoff were terrible. Staff ignored us and gave us all the wrong instructions on where to get the car. Nobody provided any information on where to pickup/drop off the car. Car was dropped off an hour late and we were charged for an extra day

The absolute worst experience I've ever had with a rental car company. Kayak should consider removing them from their search results. This company does not treat customers with respect. I actually never picked up my rental because no one was at the counter and I called them and a manager was supposed to come help me. I waited for 2hrs and at 1am I said forget it and got a car from Avis. There were half a dozen others in my situation with Payless. Horrendous service and total disrespect to paying customers.

There is fine print somewhere that mentions that there may be mandatory insurance required that costs additional money when you go to pick up the car. Take this as a good reminder to always read the fine print because we were totally surprised by it which sucked! BUT it was worse that the attendant chose not to mention that we had the choice to use our own insurance but it just came with a higher deposit which we totally would have done had we been given the option Smh. They also have a Ridiculous policy regarding tolls, which was also clearly designed to take people’s money and scare them into giving their money up. These surprises alone made us uncomfortable using the car the entire time we had it, feeling like the company was shady and not knowing what to expect from them when we returned it, but then the car also had an unpleasant smell that we were concerned would seep into our skin and clothes. There was also a stain on the seat. We actually ended up returning the car early just so that we didn’t have to deal with it or any other tricks the company may have had up their sleeves. The stress and discomfort from the beginning made it not worth the slightly lower cost to rent and brought down the overall value for the price for us. I rented from Economy years ago, probably in a different city, but this experience in Miami has left a bad taste in my mouth and I more than likely will not rent from them ever again.

Terrible. Was quoted a price. Paid that price when we paid online but for some reason the insurance was dropped, saying “you can discuss this with an agent at time of pick up”. Furthermore, the insurance cost. $200 before it was dropped. We drive all the way to Miami, 2 hours, just to find out we can’t rent the car because we refuse to pay almost $1200 for insurance. This would have been no big deal but they don’t want to give a refund either. So they lied about the cost of the insurance, allowed me to purchase the car rental, let me drive out to pick it up, I choose to cancel based on terrible communication and my ability to find a better rental, and no refund. This has been almost a joke

When booking the rental car it was not clear that the rental car location was off the airport property. Also, we were required to pay for a toll activation fee of $20/day and had to purchase insurance for $30/day. These fees were not disclosed until we got to the desk. Also, there is only an hour pickup window, and we were hassled because our flight was delayed. There is a $500 security deposit. The additional fees charges at the time we picked up the car were an additional $350 on top of what we had already paid to reserve the car. Do not recommend booking with this company.

This is borderline not a real company. I am not a regular car renter and just pick from the top of the list on kayak for price. The ad said "in terminal" which was more appealing than taking the train and long shuttle. Not only was it not in the thermal, after getting to where all the normal major brands were located, there was no signs, no indicators of where to go. This caused some panic. I referent the booking receipt that was so vague it had just an address. I asked one of the floor brokers and he said he would call the guy and send someone to get me and to wait at a bus terminal. It was not marked or had any indicators of any kind. At that time I looked up reviews and it made me sick. Never more than a one star. I rebooked another common brand on the spot and wasn't going that route..

By picking up the car they charge us € $50 cleaning service but the car was not clean. Even the employee told us that they did not have time to clean the car. They also charge us a airport fee while we pick up the car ourself. The Van inside was not save. My family members scratch they feet and were bleeding because the bucle thing were broken and ould wires were coming out. This hapened at 2 times. When we bring the Van back we told them about this and also show them our foot how scratched it was and bleeding but they did not say anything. We also travel with a baby and a carseat that we could not buckle up so it was not safe for my baby. For the price we pay for just 4 days of renting this was ridiculous and we want the costst that were applied but the service was not given to us. We want it back!! We rent a Van and we were traveling with 8 people

Rented a 12 passenger van for a college trip with students to study marine biology in southern Florida for 3 weeks. Reservation and rental agreement indicated $889 as total price, $500 (approx) downpayment was made at reservation. Upon arrival, they charged me $1,500 and said there is some required insurance although my University pays for full insurance on all fleet rentals. I do not see this in the details on expedia. The van was in poor condition - dent in the back with cracked bumper from a prior accident. One seat was literally zip-tied on. Two seats did not have seat belts so effectively serves as a 10 passenger vehicle. The zip-tied seat and missing seat belts would be against the law so I have reported this to Florida's Attorney General office for investigation.

rental was 300 but insurance was 700 + tolls were 200 those huge extra costs were nowhere to be found on kayak. on the website, insurance was 260 and the only reason why we did not buy it online (together with the car rental) is that terms were not clear, and we intended to discuss them in person. big mistake: since they charged us almost 3 times as much for insurance! And tolls? they wanted to charge us 25 dollars (plus the cost of the actual tolls, obviously) for every time we would take a toll road... that's crazy! basically we were forced to purchase "unlimited tolls" for 200 dollars, something never heard of. Besides the extortion, we had to wait well over 1 hour at the car pickup before victorycar empoyee picked us up. And they knew we had been standing there since second 1, because they immediately replied to out whatsapp messages. The car was fine, but the overall experience was bad.

This means that if you have a few hundred dollars and want to live like you’re in a music video for a few hours, Miami can make that dream come true. The city boasts plenty of exotic car rental agencies, many located right near the airport or in South Beach. Miami also has all the usual car rental companies right at the airport, who offer everything from compact economy cars to luxury sedans and SUVs. Where to get a car rental at Miami International Airport

Miami International Airport’s rental car center is conveniently located in the Miami Intermodal Center, accessible via the MIA Mover from the main terminal. Follow the pink signs in baggage claim and take an elevator to the third floor, cross a small sky bridge, and listen to the sound of chirping birds. This is the soundtrack of the MIA Mover’s airport station, where trains arrive every minute or so. Take the train over to the Intermodal Center, and most rental car companies are just a few steps from the train. Some offsite exotic and discount car rental agencies run shuttles from the Intermodal Center to their lots.

Is it possible to rent a car in Miami and drive elsewhere?

Of course, it is. Consult with your rental car’s terms and conditions, but most will allow you to drive anywhere in the U.S. at no extra charge. That said, if you drop the car off in another city, you will usually incur a drop fee.

Car rental companies will try to sell you a collision damage waiver, or CDW when you rent your car. While it will protect the car you’re renting and property damage up to certain limits, if you have comprehensive collision coverage on your car, it will likely cover your rental car as well. Also, most major credit cards offer rental car insurance coverage if you rent the car using their card.

Good things to know about renting a car in Miami

Get your own SunPass

You can buy your own SunPass and save considerable money on the rental car company’s toll fees. They’re available at Publix grocery stores and CVS and take less than 10 minutes to set up.

Miami, and most of Florida, is filled with toll roads. The tolls are payable via a SunPass, which rental car companies will rent you for varying fees. Some will charge you a flat rate per day for all the tolls you can rack up. Some will charge you a fee per toll, plus the toll charge itself. If you don’t agree to rent their SunPass, you’ll be charged via toll-by-plate, which incurs a hefty administrative charge from the rental car company for every toll you go through.

If you’re planning to drive much around South Florida, renting a SunPass from the rental car company is probably a good idea. Even the expressways from the airport to South Beach and Downtown have tolls, so you’ll be paying one way or another.

What you should know about driving in Miami

Driving in Miami is a little like Mario Kart meets Mad Max, with an occasional dose of Waterworld. Don’t let your guard down, and always expect the unexpected.

Driving in Miami can be challenging, especially if you are not used to the local conditions. The hot climate and diverse mix of drivers from various places can make the roads seem chaotic at times. However, with a bit of caution and awareness, you can navigate the roads safely.

It’s worth noting that turn signals are not always used, so it’s important to be vigilant and anticipate sudden lane changes. Some drivers may also merge into traffic without warning, so it’s essential to keep a safe following distance. Occasionally, traffic may be delayed due to accidents or incidents on the road, but this is not uncommon in any city.

Parking your car in Miami

Miami, and Miami Beach especially is filled with areas deemed residential parking only. Read signs word for word and think long and hard about whether parking there is legal. If it’s not, you will be towed almost immediately, and end up paying anywhere from $250-$500, in cash, to get your car back.

Beyond that, most parking spaces are payable through the PayByPhone, ParkMobile and ParkME apps, which you can download via a posted QR code. Miami Beach has several municipal parking garages that are considerably cheaper than parking on the street and are covered from heat and rain.

Fuel and gas stations in Miami

Miami has plenty of gas stations, though the ones in Miami Beach and near the airport are generally a dollar or more per gallon more expensive than the rest of the city. Coral Way (SW 22nd Street) between Downtown and Coral Gables has some of the best prices. As does Bird Road (SW 40th Street) west of the Palmetto Expressway.

Seasonal driving tips in Miami

Summer thunderstorms in Miami are no joke, and you may frequently find yourself leaving your hotel under a cloudless sky, then 30 minutes later driving in a blinding thunderstorm. Drive especially slow or pull over altogether. Also, the city floods almost instantly during severe storms, and some streets may have a foot or more of water in them. This is especially true in Brickell and parts of Miami Beach. Do not try to drive through these areas or you will damage your car.
