Thompson Chicago is a sophisticated property with eclectic decor with urban and British inspiration. Guests will find many rich textures like leather and velvet in deep jewel tones scattered with mid-century modern lines and warm American hardwoods. This unique boutique hotel is ideally located on the edge of Michigan Avenue. Plus, Lake Michigan is just moments from the property. Also nearby is the Oak Street Beach, the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, and Wrigley Field.
The luxury studios offer views of the Magnificent Mile and the downtown Chicago cityscape with Lake Michigan glittering in the distance. Rooms come outfitted with plush king-sized beds or cozy double beds, all of them made up with 400 thread count Sferra sheets. The modern baths contain cream-colored tiles and rain showers. Plus, there is a gourmet mini-bar and in-room safe. Those seeking extra space will want to book one of the larger suites including the Junior Suite, Skyline Loft Suite, Thompson Suite, or the Penthouse. The Penthouse is 655 square feet spread across two levels. Some of the suites include private terraces.
Dining options include Nico Osteria, an Italian seafood restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day. Guests can choose from house-made pasta, fresh seafood, and season rustic fare. The menu changes each day to reflect the catches of local fisherman. There is also a wine bar and cocktail lounge on the property called Salone Nico. The wine list is extensive, featuring bottles from Greece and Italy, and there are afternoon aperitifs, and handcrafted cocktails on offer as well.

I recently spent four nights at the Thompson Chicago for a business trip, and while I had high hopes, the experience fell short. I booked a king room but was given two doubles due to the hotel being oversold. At 6'3", sleeping in a short bed was uncomfortable, and I ended up with only 12 hours of sleep over four nights. My room was on a higher floor, but this didn't make up for the downgrade in bed size. The $50 food and beverage credit offered as compensation felt inadequate, especially with the restaurant and bar closed for renovations, leaving few options for its use. I paid $378 per night, plus a $68 resort fee, which is likely lower for the area but not inexpensive. While the room was clean, the fit and finish was at best average, and I noticed some wear, like rust in the shower and noisy plumbing that contributed to the sleepless nights. The staff interactions, except for a kind doorman in the mornings, were impersonal and left me feeling like more of a nuisance than a guest. It's disappointing because the location is excellent, but the lack of attention to guest comfort and the overall wear of the hotel made for an underwhelming stay. I had expected a more thoughtful experience, and I hope this isn't indicative of the Thompson brand. Perhaps nearby higher-priced options should be considered for a better standard of service and comfort.
Very nice
Pros. Great location, beautiful hotel with comfy rooms.
Cons. Would be nice to have ice machines on each floor
Pros. Room was well appointed and gorgeous - well laid out with an L shaped seating area , great bed, lighting and tech charging ports . Lovely staff .
Pros. Very hospitable. Staff very forthcoming. Nice space!
Pros. comfy bed, great location, nice lobby.
Cons. Front desk lady was not very helpful. Toilet smelled like sewage. They called me from front desk to tell me someone was at my door from hotel personnel when I had privacy sign on...that woke me up...What kind of "privacy on" is this?
Pros. Nice Interior Design. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. This is a much better location than other hotels I have stayed at further south. We took a very nice walk north to Lincoln Park. It is a beautiful neighborhood and does not even feel like you are in the city.
Cons. Too pricey for me to use other than business. I did not need or use "facilities" so that is the only reason I did not give that an "excellent" score. We were not impressed with the breakfast food. We were very pleased with our lunch at Gibson's across the street.
Pros. Fantastic location, outstanding room. Would go back in a minute.
Pros. The Thompson Hotel Staff were amazing, very friendly and accommodating. We were upgraded to a corner king suite as it was our wedding night so that was a pleasant surprise as well. Overall wonderful experience. Would definitely go back.
Cons. Nothing!
Pros. We loved everything about it. From the very beginning (checkin) till the very last second before we left the hotel. Everyone was so helpful and friendly. The Concierge made arrangements for a boat trip on the Chicago River. Housekeeping kept our room in perfect shape. We had a room on the 21st floor which had the perfect view towards the chicago skyline. It was awesome. I gladly recommend to visit the Thompson Chicago and will for sure also book on other occasions other Thompson hotels. Thank you for this very wonderful and perfect vacation, Thompson.
Cons. nothing!
