FAQs - booking Türkiye flights

  • Are there nonstop flights from the US to Turkey?

You can get nonstop flights to Turkey from any major international airport in the US, including New York (JFK), Los Angeles (LAX), and San Francisco (SFO). Most nonstop flights head into IST and are offered by Turkish Airlines. For those flying from the West Coast, nonstop flights from SFO are faster and much cheaper than those from LAX.

  • What are the common stopover options for flights from the US to Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (SAW)?

All flights from the US to SAW have at least one layover en route that varies depending on your airline, origin city, and destination airport. Most airlines flying from New York John (JFK) have common stops in Munich (MUC), Brussels (BRU), Milan (MXP), Dubai (DBX), Amsterdam (AMS), and Doha (DIA) depending on your airline. Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines are some of the major airlines that offer one-stop flights from San Francisco to SAW with a stop in Doha, Paris (CGD), Frankfurt (FRA), or Munich.

  • Which airport should I fly into to be closer to Istanbul’s landmarks?

Since most tourist hotspots, historical attractions, iconic restaurants, and popular markets exist on the European side of Istanbul, flying into IST puts you much closer to Istanbul’s landmarks. The Hava Bus boarded from the transportation floor should quickly get you to downtown, Taksim, Sultanahmet, or Kadikoy.

  • What is the best airport to fly into Turkey for flights from the US?

Flights from the US to Turkey usually land at Ankara Esenboga Airport (ESB), Antalya International Airport, Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, and Istanbul Airport. Of all these airports, Istanbul stands out when you consider flights from the US. Not only does the airport receive direct flights from the US, but its amenities also put it ahead of the other airports in the country.

  • Which is the main airport in Istanbul?

Istanbul is served by two high-functioning international airports, IST and SAW. IST is considered the main airport for several reasons. First, it is the larger and more modern airport and most nonstop flights from the US head into IST. Secondly, IST offers passengers premium lounges, shorter immigration queues, and many restaurant options. Third, you'll get more domestic flight connections from IST than SAW.

  • Is Istanbul International Airport accessible?

Yes. If you're a passenger with reduced mobility, you can request wheelchair assistance services through your airline. The airport also offers accessible wheelchair-accessible restrooms, stair-free options, and accessible drinking fountains. If you make a reservation for special assistance services at least 48 hours before you travel, you will get the service in less than 15 minutes on the day you fly. Just make a notification using any assistant call phone at the airport. Passengers who arrive at the airport without making a reservation may have to wait for up to 45 minutes to get this service.

  • Will I find cheap public transport at airports in Turkey?

The two main airports, IST and SAW, have various public transport options for easy access to downtown Istanbul. Taxis are available 24-hours, and there’s a bus from both airports. The transportation floor at IST is two levels below the terminal building’s main floor, and it’s where you’ll purchase bus tickets, while at SAW, you’ll find the buses just outside the main terminal building, and tickets can be purchased on board, so have the local currency.

  • Is there a hotel at Istanbul Airport?

Yes. YOTEL Istanbul Hotel operates in two locations within the airport, one is before security while the other is in the secure zone of the airport. The first is next to Door 7’s entrance Landslide of the Terminal. The hotel has about 277 sleep cabins and it also offers day rooms in 4-hour blocks. Booking a stay here gives you access to self-service drinks and food and a fitness center. The hotel in the secure zone has about 174 sleep cabins and also offers day rooms.

  • Which airport should I fly into to be close to Turkey’s coastal cities?

Those flying to Turkey to enjoy its beautiful Mediterranean beaches should fly into Antalya Airport. It is one of Turkey’s international airports with two international terminals and one domestic terminal, and AYT receives flights from the US.

  • How long is the flight to Türkiye?

An average nonstop flight from the United States to Türkiye takes 14h 51m, covering a distance of 5939 miles. The most popular route is New York - Istanbul with an average flight time of 8h 50m.

  • What is the cheapest flight to Türkiye?

  • Which airlines fly to Türkiye?

Turkish Airlines, Pakistan International Airlines & IndiGo fly the most frequently from the United States to Türkiye. The most popular route is from New York to Istanbul, and IndiGo, Avianca and Turkish Airlines fly this route the most.

  • What are the most popular destinations in Türkiye?

Based on KAYAK flight searches, the most popular destination is Istanbul (95% of total searches to Türkiye). The next most popular destinations are Antalya (2%) and Izmir (1%). Searches for flights to Ankara (0.8%), to Bodrum (0.5%) and to Adana (0.2%) are also popular.

  • How does KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Türkiye

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Türkiye flight deals.
  • Most flights from the US to Antalya International Airport (AYT) include a single layover en route. The most common layover cities are Istanbul, Frankfurt, or Munich.
  • Antalya International Airport (AYT) has three terminals, a Domestic Terminal and Terminals 1 and 2 that handle international flights. The facilities and amenities in the terminals are modern and passengers can easily get around the airport via a walkway or Bus Route 600.
  • Those looking for cheap flights to Istanbul should consider flying into Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (SAW) instead of Istanbul Airport (IST). Most US flights to SAW include a layover en route and are much cheaper than those to IST.
  • Looking for a place to relax after your flight to Istanbul Airport (IST)? Head to the IGA Lounge located next to the Passport Control Airside of the International Terminal. This lounge allows you to pay at the door whenever space is available. You can also access the lounge through a prepaid lounge pass.
  • All US citizens flying to Turkey must have a passport with a validity of six months beyond their entry date. US citizens need a visa for stays less than 90 days, and you can get an online tourist visa which is processed in less than 24h.
  • If you’re planning to travel to Istanbul from the US, consider flying with Turkish Airlines. It offers nonstop flights to IST from most cities including San Francisco (SFO), New York (JFK), Miami (MIA), and Chicago (ORD) just to mention a few.
  • If you wish to tour Istanbul in between your flight through Istanbul, you can get a transit visa from your airline (mostly Turkish Airlines) and extend your layover, giving you a chance to leave the airport and explore the city.
  • Get a car rental at Antalya Airport if you’re looking for a great way to explore attractions in the city. Avis, Aytucar, Cizgi, Filo, GoldCar, Budget, and Alamo offer onsite services in the Arrivals Hall of the terminals.
  • If you wish to be closer to the city center, consider flying into Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (SAW) instead of Istanbul Airport (IST). SAW is much closer to downtown Istanbul, and it is also an international airport receiving flights from the US. It offers many domestic flights as well.
  • Consider flying to Adana Sakirpasa International Airport (ADA) if you're looking to explore the Cilicia region. The airport is conveniently close to the city center, just about with the trip taking approximately 10 minutes when using the municipal bus service.

Rated entertainment as Mediocre as there were major problems with the Infotainment system that took probably a half hour for them to fix.

Your crew could maybe answer the call bell at least one of the times I pressed it. I pressed it first time with 2.5 hours left in our flight bc my partner was hungry and wanted a sandwich. We finally got the sandwich with 40 mins left in the flight.

Half the bathrooms assigned to economy were out of action

Delta crushed it. Flight attendant in first was attentive and just never stopped. Honestly one of the best domestic flights I’ve been on.

They were an hour late and they didn’t have my wheelchair for me

The Flight crew didn’t serve us until about 1.5 hours into the flight because of turbulence but after it ended it was fine to move around. They served us water only and snacks and then NEVER, NOT ONE TIME came through to collect trash until right before landing about 1.5 hours later. There was absolutely no need for that. They crew was just standing around talking and visiting with each other and really never tried to see if we might want something besides water or even try to come pick up trash. This is VERY unusual for a Delta flight but it was not what I would have expected for a 4 hour flight.

The 1st class male crew member was very pleasant - the short female with round glasses , maybe in 50’s had no personality- never spoke when delivering my food, drink, & never smiled the whole trip! In fact looked annoyed when the boarding proses was happening- I would never hire this woman - unfriendly . Have never dealt with a crew member like her-

5-hour delay due to storms in Tanoa and airspace restricted by Miami traffic controllers.

A regional sized plane was used for a cross country flight with no overhead bin space. I had to "pink check" my laptop and my medications. I was NOT pleased!!!!

Absolutely nothing flight was cancelled and delayed for 2 days. Barely a heads up I want a full refund

Overnight flight in the old style Business class, but still very good.

I was in business class, without the business class amenities. Large seat with lots of legroom, but no TV or bed. Food was okay, but I did enjoy the Turkish red wine.

Excellent service and comfort from the moment you check in. Flight crew is hyper focused on making passengers comfortable and at ease. It’s like a flying hotel!

Only chicken as a meat dish through out the flight

Nothing really was great as such. Seen other no name airlines perform better.

Quality of service on board was very inconsistent. FA service primarily seemed robotic and they barely engaged with passengers

I’m unclear why I had to pay extra for assigned seats as Turkish airlines did not honor the seating. We were placed across the aisle from each other on TK 34, and were seated behind one another on TK 694. Because my name was misspelled on e-ticket (Klawiter, instead of Klawitter) I could not log onto website to get the connection gate number in Istanbul. The monitors in the airport were a jumbled mess 1/2 Arabic and 1/2 English.

On line check in needs a lot of improvement. I tried and gave up.

Food not good, flight attendants not the best, not accommodating very ruff

the female flight attendant was racist towards me. I could tell she treated the two other passengers next to me with more softness.

Fantastic. Smooth boarding with an infant. Never experienced it with any other carriers.

This was a flight operated by Lufthansa. See me prior comments, which were meant for this experience. The CSA, Ashley, should be reprimanded if not fired for incompetence, being rude, and very, very slow. She was whispering to other CSAs, blaming my flight change on others, unable to give me a seat assignment, telling me could not help without offering any advice (I travel 200,000 miles a year and am a consultant to the airlines, so I know how this gets done PRETTY DAMN WELL). Then, she gave me literally the worst seat on the airline (yes, there were other seats open) - the one right next to the bathroom that was so bad the other PAX next to me left to move to another seat. My seat kept getting rammed (3x) by the crew with their carts (no turbulence to speak of), other passengers grabbing the seat to get in or out of the bathroom, and listening to the bathroom flush all night.

This was a Lufthansa flight, not United. The CSA at the counter, Ashley, was not only incompetent, but quite rude. Me and two other PAX waited over 7 minutes standing in front of her and another CSA and they ignored us. We joked that we must have accidently taken invisibility pills. She could have at least said "I'll be with you in a moment, I'm currently....". I could go on about how rude she and the other CSAs were (whispering, not communicating with me, blaming the situation on others, etc.). She would not work for me. Then, she gave me literally the worst seat on the plane. the worst. My seat kept getting bumped (rammed twice by the crew with their carts and about every 5 minutes by someone using the bathroom), listening to the bathroom all night, crowded seat, etc.

My seat was broken. WiFi didn’t work. Gate crew at HOU were rude and condescending. Treated all the passengers badly. Bad experience, United.

First flight of the day… MINIMUM FUEL! 15 minute landing delay at HOU due to fog turned into a 2+ hour delay! Rather than circle, they had to divert to another city to refuel! Sat on tarmac at Austin to refuel. We ALL missed our connections! The crew, including pilots, were clueless. Crew was really a mess. At HOU, Untied employees were exceedingly rude to all. It was pitiful.

Food wasn’t very good, old business seating configuration on an old A340

An hour and a half late is UNACCEPTABLE. The negative impact to our family is unconscionable. And for the price we were forced to pay...

Standard flight experience, but there is only power at the seat to row 20 on the aircraft, on my initial check in it did not say that was the case

Not a fan of the diagonal partially enclosed business class seats or how they have to be converted to beds manually by crew. I prefer more isolation and user control for switching to lie flat.

No lounge access with “United First” ticket. False alarm about late flight, jeopardizing connection. Wrong meal. Loose power socket would not hold plug, could not charge device. In-flight access to text messaging did not work. Toilet seat on plane would not stay up.

Staff disappeared after dinner service until breakfast, no help with beds, no help running to our gate to catch connection cause flight was late, our luggage didn’t make it, took over 24 hours to get luggage to hotel, no compensation!!

Everything was good except food. I believe there is room for improvement

Houston to Porto flight delayed landing made us miss our connection. Tried to get on standby for the next flight and even though the lady knew we wouldn’t be able to get on it and she sent us down there. We sat there three hours and then we’re told there’s no way you’re getting on this flight. So we had to go to customer service and ended up having to spend the night in Frankfurt and missed a whole day of our vacation in Porto

my flight was at 3:45 after that they delayed to 4:40 I have transit from Chicago to Frankfurt and Frankfurt to vina airport from vina to Erbil buy the Time I come to Frankfort my other flight left me I have to stay at airport all day with my 5 kids ask for help no one help me I spent at airport almost $450 just for food was horrible flight ever I call and ask for hotel from united customer service they been telling me we can’t provide any hotel I need some refund or fixed my flight when I return to America need some one respond my email

My experience would have been greatly improved by arriving on time to connect to my Porto flight. The staff that dealt with the aftermath of the late arrival evidently booked my group into a hotel in Frankfurt. This reduced my time in Porto Portugal a day and half. I do want to commend Jorge Klein for his hard work. He spent a great deal.of time trying to rebook the flight and he eventually did rebook for the next day and did provide accommodations for me overnight. This was a big issue for me and the group I traveled. The rest of the trip was good.

Not your fault…..didn’t get my drink until just before landing….bumpy flight.

Lufthansa flights were great. United flight from houston to Frankfurt had very small seats with almost no space

Second time I took this flight, and they lost my luggage both times. Waiting for my suitcase now, last time it took two days to get it back.

Everything could be better. The plain was in Orlando for 3 hours prior to boarding. After boarding all the passengers they found out that plane has a mechanical problem. After an hour the problem was solved, the pilot comes on and states, (We have to go back to the gate and take on more fuel!) Are you kidding me???? Who they have for pilots, Boy scouts?? I barely made my connecting flight to Vienna, but my suitcase did not. I'm still waiting for it, in Gyor, Hungary. Am I having fun yet?? Other passenger were in the same binned. I travelled all over the world both for business and pleasure with all types of airlines. By far of all the carriers I travelled with, Discover is the worst. I'm contemplating to bight the bullet and go back to the US with a different carrier. For International flights, the seats are made for little people. The person in front of me had his seat reclined the whole way, I felt like he was sitting in my lap. For closing, I would not let my dog travel with Discover, yet alone recommend it to an other person. Does it sound like I'm frustrated, Think about having to travel back to the US with them. I'm sure I'll not hear back from you, because nobody wants to hear about bad news, but with all the hype Discover puts out there about their services, nothing could be further from the truth. Joseph A. Nagy

Only problem we experienced was not anything to do with Lufthansa. When changing planes in Frankfurt we spent over an hour on passport control line. Lufthansa did a marvelous job on everything from keeping me informed via texts, to terrific cabin crew.

Wonderful service and very comfy in the bulkhead in Economy Plus! Delicious food.

The BA team at Sky Harbor is deplorable, full of unnecessary attitude and poor communication. It seems like every member of the team was looking at another to solve the problem, instead of taking agency to do so themselves. I saw no less than 6 altercations with the same gate agent where he threatened to revoke the passengers boarding pass for asking a wildly reasonable question, something as simple as where the cue to board was. I’ve complained to BA before but it seems this isn’t an issue for them, which is very disappointing

Boarding poor in London,ok in Chicago. Don’t like Heatrow/terminal5

It was very good. We got a late start by about an hour and a half. However I worked rather have that than crash. It was purely mechanical. They had our tickets ready when we came off the plane in London for the next leg. The only mishap was when we got to Lisbon my husbands luggage made or bit mine didn't. All was not lost because I did finally get it 2 days later. I was really pleased that they c made the effort.

Leg space was not enough. The meal was not satisfactory.

Liked that my American Airlines status seamlessly transferred to BA so luggage check was free. Flights were on time, boarding quick. Wish they didn’t assign connecting gate so late at Heathrow.

The entire process was flawless and as expected flying first class. The only thing that I have a complaint on...when first boarding, the plane was EXTREMELY cold; then when we were trying to sleep, it was way too hot - just better regulating (especially trying to sleep) would have made it perfect.

- OK plane. Basic accommodations. OK food. The digital window shade wasn't working.

- OK plane. Basic accommodations. OK food. The digital window shade wasn't working. - Expect to be woken up more than an hour before landing when they start dinging the bell and making announcements and turning on all cabin lights to serve a snack. I would prefer they remain quiet and only serve people who want to wake up.

Better food and more space in the seats. Also when doing the web check in both times I was going in to your site the minute you open it and there is not really many seats to choose only to buy!!!
